Therapy can be a great way to learn about yourself. We can explore and understand trauma that you experienced growing up, and how that affects your life now. You can learn how to set boundaries and learn to let go of old beliefs and stories that hold you back. You can discover or re-connect with what you love about yourself. You can learn how to put yourself first while also balancing the needs of relationships with others. You can learn skills to communicate better. And you can learn to take risks (and manage the anxiety that comes with that) to build the life you want!
Childhood trauma can look like...
Having to fend for yourself when seeking safety
Having your feelings invalidated and/or denied or responded to in a way that created fear/shame
Being forced to find ways to self-soothe alone and/or find an escape from a painful reality (e.g. video games)
Having to hide your "true self" due to fear of not being accepted
Having parents/caregivers who consistently prioritized their personal life/work over your needs
Having parents/caregivers who were unable to regulate their emotions
Having parents/caregivers focused on appearance and/or success
Having parents/caregivers who did not model boundaries
Other experiences—embarrassing moments, being bullied, being "othered," moving, medical crises, losing a pet, financial or legal difficulties
This is not an exhaustive list. If you think your childhood is still impacting you today, reach out and we can discuss how therapy might be helpful for you.
